AEO Strategies: How to Get Found by AI Engines in 2025

The 6 evidence-based plays for building AI visibility — based on real citation data, not the wrapper tactics being widely sold.

What Is AEO?

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of optimizing your digital presence to be retrieved, cited, and mentioned by AI-powered answer engines — ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and the growing number of AI assistants that pull from the web. Unlike traditional SEO where ranking position 1 is the goal, AEO goal is to be the source an AI engine quotes when answering your target buyer question.

The 6 Key Plays

1. Build Your Citation Map

ChatGPT and other AI engines heavily weight mentions in high-trust external sources. The sources with the most citation influence: Reddit (high-engagement threads with your brand or product mentioned), G2 and Capterra (software review platforms), LinkedIn (especially LinkedIn articles and posts with significant engagement), Wikipedia (entity pages for your company or key topics you own), YouTube (video content that demonstrates authority in your space), and Crunchbase (company profile for business entity recognition). Getting mentioned in these sources — not just linking to them — is the foundation of AI visibility.

2. Page Shape Rewrites

Most pages bury the answer after a lengthy introduction. AI engines extract the first direct-answer sentence from content. Audit your top 10 landing pages: does the first sentence directly answer the main question a buyer would ask? If not, rewrite the opener. This single change — moving the answer to the first sentence — is often the highest-ROI optimization available.

3. Source-Jacking Trusted Surfaces

Your own domain may not have enough authority for AI engines to cite it directly, especially in a competitive topic area. Source-jacking means publishing your expertise on surfaces that already have AI engine trust: Medium, Substack, industry publications, podcast transcripts, and conference presentations. A mention of your brand on a trusted surface carries more AI citation weight than 10 pages on your own domain.

4. Original Data Creation

AI engines prefer primary sources. Commission a survey, publish original research, or aggregate your own customer data into statistics others will cite. One data-backed article with proprietary statistics can generate citations that accumulate over months.

5. Entity Clarity

AI engines use knowledge graphs — databases of known entities (people, companies, products) — to resolve who you are when they encounter your brand name. Create or update your Wikidata entry. Submit your company to Google Knowledge Graph. Ensure your Organization schema matches your Wikidata entity. The clearer your entity, the less likely you are to be confused with a competitor or have your citations attributed to the wrong brand.

6. AI Attribution Instrumentation

You cannot improve what you do not measure. Test your AI visibility manually by typing your target buyer prompts into ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. Track whether your brand appears, whether you are cited or just mentioned, and whether ghost citations are happening. Use AEO Track AI monthly scans to track changes in your scores over time.

The Core Insight

ChatGPT rewards being mentioned in high-trust external surfaces — the broader web conversation about your topic. Perplexity rewards having verifiable, cited source links pointing to your content. Google AI Overviews rewards structured data, freshness, and author authority. A complete AEO strategy addresses all three.
